I was born and raised in Southwest Virginia, and I love the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and the rich culture of its people.
Ever since I was a child, my favorite things to do were to run around in the woods with my friends, splash through creeks looking for crawdads, swap stories around campfires in the wilderness, and fish for smallmouth bass on the New River.
I completely understand our Virginia heritage, and fully appreciate the rights granted to all Americans by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Firearms have been a part of American society from the very beginning, and remain an important part of daily life for many Americans.
However there is no disputing that the tens of thousands of annual gun deaths and injuries that occur in our country are unacceptable. The ever increasing death tolls and frequencies of mass shootings demonstrate an urgent need for sensible reforms. If we all work together and keep our minds open, I’m confident we can come to some mutual agreements.
